Restoring NAND WITHOUT hardware method

A simple and easy tutorial to restoring your NAND backup.
This restoration method assumes that you have access to gateways latest "Ultra" menu.

1.) Make sure you have your NAND.BIN is placed on your 3DS's SD.
2.) Launch the GW menu (the one where it has NAND backup, etc)
3.) Hold up while pressing "Downgrade" and you should be asked to restore the NAND backup to sysNAND.

Easy as 123! If you were reading GW's "News" posts, you would've most likely already been aware of this.

The purpose of this is mainly for the newcomers of Gateway who are running the 9.x firmware. Since gateway offers the ability to downgrade the system to 4.5 - if a user wanted to restore their system back to original/stock condition, before gateway was installed - then this tutorial would be ideal. I personally have had to restore my NAND using this method, quite a few times - mainly because I wanted to use CFW and install DevMenu, but my system kept failing on the DevMenu CIA installation process (it wouldn't connect to WiFi) and so I gave up and wanted to return to stock.

What would be some reasons for doing this, for example? That might be good to add to the tutorial. For example, can this reset the nagging system update prompts?

The advantage is mainly for the new comers of Gateway 3DS. Since Gateway "Ultra" offers the ability to downgrade the firmware from 9.x to 4.5 - if a user wanted to restore their console back to it's original condition, they could do so by this method.

Aren't there issues with save encryption before 6.x? I have heard of issues for playing retail carts and ROMs, but don't know specfics.

I honestly don't know - when I downgraded, all of my stuff from the eShop were still installed and they all still worked. I'm not sure if my CART copy of Pokemon Y works though, because I haven't tested it. I don't plan on testing Pkmn Y any time soon, as I restored my system back to 9.x and gave up on installing DevMenu with CFW.

When you restored your system back to 9.x, was it through a backed up NAND made on 9.x with the Gateway exploit?

I have a backup of my 9.2 NAND

I think i get it, i used this myself to downgrade from 9.2 to 4.2 but did not know you could restore 4.2 over your current 4.2 that might be having issues by using this, nice.

i'm guessing this is only for people with gateway? i know you can use a gateway menu without the card, but not sure if this works.

you don't need the flashcard, just be on 9.2 or less to be able to launch the menu.

Now I was on 9.2,downgraded with GW Installer to 4.5 and had have been using RXTools to play my Retail games on 9.7 emuNAND

Now I'm assuming my saves will be gone/corrupted.....anyway to restore or back them up?

you will need to go back to 6.x+ to be able to backup your saves as decrypted form.
then re-downgrade to 4.x and restore your saves which will be encrypted for 4.x

I never used Save Data Filler, but I think it has restriction. Maybe it works only with game as cia, or cartridge. I never remember which one doesn't work.
inform yourself before upgrading (restoring your NAND dump) to 9.2, it's no use to do unneeded manipulation is it's not possible to backup save for your game.

Note:
not all games are using 6.x encryption key for saves.
some of your games are probably already working because they use 4.x save key (even if you are on 9.2 they can use old keys).

if you don't plan to go back to 9.2 (or find a different 3DS in 6.x+), you could try to find saves online from another user.
look in the savegame request thread, filetrip or other websites.
