Misc Has anyone attempted to abuse the Nintendo Zone streetpass relay?

I'm based in the UK and have within the past 3.5 days managed to get near 15 individual Mii's but 215 hits. i would like to see more Mii's and am using the attwifi ssid with MACycler. which works but again the catch rate seems awfully low. though better than say what i was seeing weekly.

Try varying the time of day that you run the program to see if you get more new streetpass hits

Sorry to be patronizing (i don't intend to), but have you followed the guide. After a bit of a struggle i managed to get it working. Anyhow this is what worked for me.



another key point to remember is ICS requires 192.168.0.1 as its network so change your lan to e.g. 192.168.1.1 lastly people should get to using programs like MACycle. As it is pretty handy.

Yes I did everything and followed all steps the multiple times I've tried. My computer is capable and that's how I got the hotspot accessible in the first place. Now what you said about the ICS is interesting to me... please elaborate.. (I'm guessing you mean I have to change my MAC address to a reasonable attwifi MAC address before I try connecting my 3DS to the internet, and that my original one won't work?)
I downloaded both MAC cyclers so a good way to have a different MAC before I try connecting could be though MAC cycler?

On my home router setup i found it was using the primary network 192.68.0.1 this clashed with what ICS required (kept seeing error messages). did a little research into ICS and found that as you are sharing the connection it wants to make the Router (i.e the wifi card/ adapter) into the primary network of 192.168.0.1 however it won't in windows as the address was already in use. So what i then went and did was to access the router through the Web interface and change the primary network for it to 192.168.1.1 therefore it removed the clash. ICS was then able to stabilize. I've found to set this relay up its easier with cmd line than it was with the Hosted virtual router program.


You did mention you were able to get the hosted network running prior can you try in an elevated CMD line "netsh wlan show hostednetwork" the output should be (when connected)

Also try out the MACycler program as Ive found it to be the only one that spoofs my WiFi card.

I would check to see if you're having your MAC address shifted. I am using an Atheros chipset and it always shifts my MAC address from the 4x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx range to the 2x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx which results in me always getting passes with the same people who are also shifted to that range. Some people are being charitable and shifting through those shifted MAC addresses as well.

it is being shifted ive seen it with a railink chipset usb dongle im using also still no hits.

Which offset are you being affected by?

If the example he posted above is accurate and from his setup, his offset is in the 3x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx range.

I guess that is another one that I can add to my offset batch script, I've been running through the 0x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and 2x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx offset ranges and usually get around 6 people each time.

Since you are in the 3x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx range and you are running through them so fast, you may still be the person on all the relays and that's why you cannot get new passes.

For us who are being shifted, less is more. The 3x:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx seems more rare so your pool of possible users is probably even smaller than mine. I get the same ten people most of the time and many times I'll get multiple passes with the same person in a time period. If I run overnight, I tend to get more individual passes (though still the same set of people, I just don't get multiples in a set of ten passes). When I leave mine overnight, I tend to set it for a minimum of a 30 minute cycle.

T_T I would so love to StreetPass Japanese 3DS's... but I don't think I have any of the things for this! I've got a single Wifi Modem, which I can't access the settings for some reason, and really don't want to have to shell out more money for a device that might not even work for it...

Is there any hope for me?

Also, I was wondering if it's possible a Wii Homebrew could be made that does this, since the Wii can connect to the Internet and 3DS at the same time? Just a hopeful idea...

Edit: I found that it can be done from a PC's Wireless! >_< I've set it up, using Virtual Router Manager and Macshift... I now see Nintendo Zone glowing, but I still can't get an active connection, nor a StreetPass... What have I probably done wrong?

Make sure that you have selected the network adaptor that your computer uses to connect to the internet for the shared connection in Virtual Router Manager. Also check to see if the mac address applied to the the wireless hotspot is the same as the one you tried to set.

"D-Link" (intended Wifi connection)
"attwifi" (Virtual Routher)

I type in Command Prompt both:

macshift\macshift.exe -i "D-Link" 4E53504F4F46

then
netsh wlan start hostednetwork

But the Mac Address doesn't change for the Virtual network. Also, like in your image, the D-Link always says it's Not Connected (Seems to happen a lot when using Shared Connection), so that's correct, right?

I've tested, I can even access the internet through it! And it shows the Nintendo Zone glowing. But as soon as I try to use the Nintendo Zone, it dies. So that's the Mac Address problem? I don't know why it won't set it...

I noticed a program called MacPass, so figured I'd give it a try, but it doesn't get the Mac Address changed either... (It seems to need the Virtual set to "Wi-Fi ", which I did)

I am guessing that the "LinkSys" is a wired ethernet connection. Yes the "D-Link" network connection does not need to be connected to anything.

What make and model is the chipset that your wireless uses?

No the Nintendo zone connection problem isn't related to the fact that you can't change the mac address, it is because that it requires an unsecured wireless network to work. When creating a virtual hotspot under windows it is a requirement that it must have WPA2 encryption.

You can't make the virtual router connection unsecured as it is a requirement under windows that you have WPA2 encryption on it. The streetpass relay fucntion will work perfectly fine over an encrypted network, it is only nintendo zone that won't work.

If it turns out that you can't change the mac address you can add the mac address that you are using to the personal mac address list on the google spreadsheet. Then if someone cycles through that list you will be able to get a streetpass hit. You won't get many streetpass hits but at least you will get some.

What good would that do? The LinkSys is my Internet connection... It won't do any good then. (The D-Link refuses to connect to the modem every time I've tried before).

I wouldn't confuse SSID for something else. I'm rather used to computers, just learning to use things in different/new ways isn't always easy (old dog, new tricks, kind of thing).

... huh. I guess that's true. Any is still more than none... But why wouldn't I be able to change it like all the others that do the same method?

edit: Also, does this usually work better if running XP? I'm using Win7 right now...

Since you are trying to set this up using two wireless adaptors, I think that windows by default has setup the virtual hotspot to run off the "LinkSys" connection as it is the "active" connection.

I don't know what the differences are between setting this up on xp compared to windows 7, I've only had experience with setting this up under windows 7. Though from some brief reading it looks a little harder to setup under xp.

So, do you have any idea why the mac address changer programs have no effect on mine, though they apparently do work? The Home Pass idea has been going a while (it seems?), so I would like to assume that I'm not the only one with a problem like this...

Yeah, it looks like doing it on XP takes driver modifications, obviously something bothersome to tamper with... So I guess I'll stick to Win7 for this.

Well, I tried your idea of making my LinkSys have that Mac Address, that didn't work, so in frustration I set all three (both adapters and the virtual) to have that Mac Address, and suddenly attwifi has the right mac address... and then I get a Blue Screen, and about 10 reboots (each with a bluescreen) until I remove both adapters.
Now I'm trying to get my LinkSys to even be recognized (somehow my D-Link is connecting... barely)

Ok, the LinkSys is back up. Not sure what happened, but it would only install on the front ports. Couldn't even recognize it again on the back ones...

So, any idea what happened, or how to get the good Mac Address without Blue Screening myself?
