I haven't dabbled into DOTA 2 trading yet, but are the items you get worth something? How do you get them?
Is it like TF2, where you play 50 - 80 minutes and you get 1 random drop, 99% of the time worth shit?
Or do you get it by winning matches/achievements?

And of course Valve is more generous, they have other sources of income, which enables them to be generous. I just feel and fear that in the end DOTA will win, simply because they are waaaaayyyyyyyy bigger and richer than LoL. And that would be a shame IMHO
A small chance of getting an item after every match. A sure chance of getting an item after a match If you level up.
But during Halloween, Valve had a special game mode where winning team gets 2 items and losing team gets only one. Matches under that mode lasts around 23-30 mins. Though, this event lowered the prices of a lot of items in the dota 2 trading market and a lot of common items now really worth so small. Only the good looking sets/items are only worth something. The only items not affected by this is the new items during that time.

This Christmas though, they weren't giving out too much. Matches lasts for 11-30 mins, 1 nice present for winning team and 1 naughty for losing team. Chances for getting really good items for both gifts are really really small though but there were also people who gets good items on naughty gifts. I managed to pick something that is drop-only and traded it for this, a purchase-only item.
This event also lowered the current existing items, but not very much like on halloween. People still wouldn't trade newer items for old ones.

Valve still profits in Dota 2 though, aside from their other incomes.
Also, dota community is really bigger since came first years before LOL and HoN. Dota 2 players will just be "migrating" from wc3 dota. HoN wasn't exactly a 1:1 copy because IceFrog wasn't in it so it didn't pull most of the wc3 dota players. LoL isn't really something close to dota from what i know. The gameplay rules are different since they have AP(?) and AD. So it probably didn't entice a lot of wc3 dota players before. Dota 2 however, has IceFrog and is backed by Valve so it would really end up pulling a lot of already existing wc3 dota players.

In the end, Yes dota 2 would win because it has an older and bigger community, and not just because of Valve.

Oh, I find the Hero names stupid compared to LoL, just a bit..... generic? Omniknight, Bounty Hunter, Lone Druid, Night Stalker, Lifestealer? Uninspired IMHO, just a minor annoyance of course.

Ty for the DOTA 2 item explanation, I'll keep it in mind. Could well be that in 1 year from here I'm all up in DOTA 2 and its items, so better to know these kinds of things ASAP.

I thought LoL was way bigger at this moment, than DOTA 2? I just see DOTA 2 as the Apple, and LoL as the Samsung or any other company that threatens to really become bigger than Apple.
Apple has all the money in the world to sue and bully Samsung out of business, and it's sadly only a matter of time before they deliver a new blow with some kind of ridiculous lawsuit :(

And yes LoL has AP (=magic power) and AD (=Attack Damage).

Well some names were old, and those aren't really their names but some sort of title. A relic of Warcraft III. Omniknight is Purist Thunderwrath, Bounty hunter is Gondar, Lone Druid is Syllabear, and so on.

Dota 2 items doesn't really mean much in a match. Just pure cosmetics. You would still be fine even without any. But I just prefer having a dragon as a courier than a donkey.

Well at this moment, LoL is bigger than Dota 2. Warcraft III DotA however, has many players. From what some people claim, Asian countries are still on wc3 dota.

all saddened and lonely cause the people I usually play with went to the Philippines for a few weeks... Garena PH is blocked in Canada and the NA servers are blocked over there. D:

How would that relate to the infographic? All the numbers on there are actual stats. It actually does have the highest amount of active players of any game.
Dota is only really still popular in the countries that Garena serves (which is only like 6 or 7 countries). Last time I've been to the Philippines, Dota was played and advertised absolutely everywhere (I can recall seeing a Dota Allstars poster at every shopping mall I've been to when I was there). That is certainly not the case over where I live. Hell, I probably would never have heard of the game if it wasn't for that Basshunter song.

@Satangel:
At each level up, you get a random item. You can also get random item drops from a match.
You could buy all these in the store. Or you could buy keys cheaper which unlocks chests of different kinds, which contains neat gear for a single hero.
You can see which hero you'll get gear for with each chest. But it'll still be a random item outta those shown the chest may drop. So chance is, you'll already get something you have.

Then during times like Halloween, Christmas DotA2 has a special game mode with Greevilings (a special courier) where each match you get a drop of some sort, plus the game mode is quite short.
Sometimes even players just idle during this game mode only to get the loot, ie they don't even play which is kinda sad.

I wouldn't fear DotA2 winning anything, LoL is humongous in korea and the competitive scene.
Then again I wouldn't be bothered since DotA2 is the better game of the two thanx to it's deeper gameplay.
Still Heroes of Newerth is the fastest of the three. I really loved that game before jumping the DotA2 bandwagon. If I fire up that game today, I fear I will fail so miserably because I don't know any of the new heroes.

what i meant was, actual stats for active online.
but there are some undocumented or not included like china etc since they mostly really don't bother counting. because there isn't just a single dota platform.

Regardless, it's not that popular in North America, one of the biggest demographics in the world. Whereas LoL is incredibly popular here.

Used to play LoL... But the community drove me off.

You can mute people y'know. Pretty sure every LoL player would scream at me for suggesting doing it of course since it's a team game.
But listening to whiny elitist little shits all game definitely isn't fun.
Tis why I quit LoL. It got annoying having to mute my teammates every match. I wasn't even doing poorly either. I'm not MOBA retarded, but everyone treats the game like their personal divine quest and their teammates are just their slave fodder.

Should check out Smite. Has a few elitist dipshits like any other MOBA, but most of them are max level. I noticed at the lower end of the spectrum, people tended to be a hell of a lot more tolerant. Mostly because Smite is a new superior style of MOBA, so even seasoned MOBA players have to learn the ropes even if they know in-depth how MOBA works. I didn't start running into douchebags for quuuuuite a while.
