Hacking Planning to buy a PSP

Hi guys, im planning to buy a PSP, probably from ebay. From what I read in the sticky, I think it'll probably be safe to buy the PSP 2000? I basically want to play homebrews/backups and go online on PSN. Is this possible on a hacked PSP?
And also, should I buy a psp with a 5.X fw or 6.Xfw in order to go online and play multiplayer (if thats possible on a hacked psp).

All of it is possible on all PSP's these days. The only reason why the PSP-2000 with a pre-8B Data Code is recommended is that it's the best balance between quality and "hackability" as it's the best "Pandorable" PSP there is. If you're not interested in experimenting though, any model will do, really.

tbh, all i want to do is just play backups/homebrews (mostly backups) and go and play online. Is this possible on ANY version of the PSP (e.g. psp 300, e-1000 etc?) regardless of what firmware its on?

I bought a brand new PSP 3000 9g on Amazon for Christmas and it does all of that.

And that will get you started. From there you won't have too much trouble depending on what you want to run.

The E-1000 doesn't have a WiFi module, has mono sound and the built quality leaves a lot to be desired. It's called the PSP Street for a reason, it's literally a ghetto PSP... so no, you don't want that - it can't go online. Any PSP-3000 will suffice if you can't find a PSP Go or a PSP-2000 with a Data Code earlier or equal to 8B - depends on what form-factor and features you're looking for.

The PSP-2000 (pre-8B) is fully-Pandorable, so it's the best choice for all those who want to experiment with firmwares. It's also perma-hack-able via cIPL.
The PSP-3000 easily has the best screen out of the three and it has a built-in mic for Skype. Unfortunately, it's not Pandora-compatible.
The PSP Go has built-in storage, but you have to get used to the form-factor, plus it's not Pandora-compatible. That said, it has Bluetooth, so you can connect your headset or even a SIXAXIS/Dual Shock 3 pad to it.

Just choose the system with the features that interest you the most - all three will give you PSN compatibility.

PSP 3000 and PSP Go sounds good to me. Another noobish question, does the pandora basically make your psp a perma-hack? Meaning you dont have to continuously install a cfw on your psp everytime you turn it on? If yes, then how long would it normally take to install a cfw on a psp 3000/go?

PSP-1000 is fully hackable also but has only 32mb ram compared to the other versions(64 mb) and has a the sound is not as good cause the speakers placed on the botom of the psp.

the limit in RAM is only a problem if your planing in using intensive homebrew apps like pro-c

I believe (not sure but someone can correct me if I'm wrong) the main advantage to having pandora capable PSP is recovery. If you brick your PSP, you can easily save it if it is pandora capable. You can permanently install the hack on some PSP 3000 systems, but my 9g, I think, will only run the temporary version of CFW. I'm happy with the temporary version as I usually just sleep the system instead of shutting down.

Like dronesplitter said, pandora is used for recovery.

You can get a permanent CFW install on non-pandora PSPs by downgrading them to 6.20, but this might not work on the latest models, so getting an older 3000 (or any 2000) would be best for that.

Though the reset-to-hacked process only takes a few seconds once it's already been installed...

ah ok. Since people are selling the psp go cheaper than the psp 3000, i think I might go for the Go. Can I use any regular M2 SD Cards or do they have to be from Sony? (I think the answer is that I can use a regular M2 card but I still want to be sure).

All the Gos we've seen can have the 6.20 hack installed, so if you don't mind the weird form-factor it's a good choice (and it has 16GB of internal storage).

It should be a legit M2 card. Doesn't have to be Sony, Sandisk or whatever will work too, as long as it's legit (I.E. don't get it from a cheap chinese import shop).

There's no SD adapters, by the way. M2 is almost the exact same size as the SD, shit won't fit.

ah ok. Have you used the Go before? Im leaning towards the 3000 due to its ergonomic design etc but if the comfortability of the Go is the as 3000 then personally idm.

I have, it feels a little flimsy when open, but on the other hand the normal PSP design is pretty solid anyways which is why they seem odd compared to each other.

I'd see if you can find a Go to handle and see if you like it.

When I said "SD" earlier, I meant MicroSD.
There are no adapters, M2 is the same size as MicroSD.

The Xperia Play and the PSP GO are pretty much the same, yeah. If you're comfortable with the Play, the Go will be just fine.

Rydian made a little mistake, M2 is the same size as MicroSD, not SD. So there's no card small enough to make an adapter for - You'll have to buy an M2.

Lol you remind me of when I was buying a PSP in August for myself. Well, I looked at all the PSP versions and I favoured the 1000 series over the rest. It gave me no trouble to soft mod it at all and I can play any game on it via the Pro-c firmware I have loaded on it right now. Only thing that bothers me is that the ram is small but its barely noticeable, all games run smoothly so theres no lag. I don't play online so the PSP 1000 not having the feature of playing multiplayer games over a WAN doesn't bother me. The inferior screen quality compared to the other versions don't bother me either. Also, my favourite thing about the 1000 is its design. It feels like I have a mini PS2 in my hand but without the second analog, the L2+R2 triggers and of course L3+R3. The other versions are extremely lighter and feels like paperweight. There are cases where I have used both the PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 to test out how different they are from the PSP 1000. As it turned out I disliked playing games on either of them because they did not give my hands the comfort and excitement that the PSP 1000 gives me.

Anyways, in your case, sounds like a PSP 2000 pre-8B sounds perfect for you. I heard that the 3000 has problems playing some homebrew games so the PSP 2000 pre-8B is what you should consider at the moment.

I would strongly recommend the 6.60 PRO fast recovery method. The PSP uses the 'official' firmware, but can use homebrew (and backups) by launching the Fast Recovery app.

Why? You can boot into OFW at any time even with a permanent CFW installed. Just hold SELECT from a cold boot.
