This is what I was afraid of. Uninformed devs being scared away by the scene's poking. To their eyes, Homebrew = Piracy, which is not necessarily true, and even if, piracy does not hurt sales as much as they['d like us to] think it does.

It seems like actual piracy doesn't hurt the console, more so, the idea, and perception of piracy.

You know what we need? A legitimate developer who's also active on the 'temp..On second thought, that may not be the greatest idea.

Okay, let's have a look at Renegade Kid's portfolio...
  • Dementium - an admittedly fun game considering the device it was released for, otherwise pretty generic.
  • The Moon - a protorelease of their 3D engine.
  • ATV Wild Race... err... Well, it works at 60FPS... that's a thing... I guess...?
  • Face Racers - casual gamers unite! Nope.
  • Mutant Mudds - so I herd dis gaem is gud or something, so they get a point for this one.
  • Bomb Monkey - OHLOOKITSCOLUMNS! :glare:
  • Planet Crashers - this looked entertaining until I saw the 1 vs. 1 battle engine... God, could you use any less polygons?
  • ATV Wild Ride 3D - More of the same... err... okay? If you like ATV, I suppose...?
1 point. 1. Yeah, they can whine all they want - their games aren't selling because they're meh, not because of evil pirates.

Well Dementium II (you forgot it) was one of the best (out of the few) FPS games on the DS and it's great regardless of platform. I'll get it on PC when the port hits. D1 was pretty flawed but the tech achievement was pretty great, 60 FPS with the lighting as well.

Give them more credit than that as trashing them for not liking piracy is just petty.

I meant Dementium as a series, and I won't dispute their programming prowess - 60FPS on the DS is a mirracle. I will say that their games are rather meh though because for the most part, they are.

I'll agree D1 was pretty meh but I felt that D2 was fantastic for a few reasons.

Much better level structure and variety.
Enemy design was vastly improved.
Good save structure.
Better torch and health system.
Far better weapons.

Things like that.

I like how this is now a "Discredit Renegade Kid for having an opinion thread" when everyone was rubbing their clits (and most rightfully so I'd guess) over Mutant Mudds a couple months back.

God forbid a developer speak out against piracy.
I suppose you're right, but it's still worth to note that they don't exactly have a lot of "good" titles on their resume, so their opinion isn't exactly a shining example of how "good games can get killed by piracy".

Still, I think it's quite valid for a developer to say that piracy is bad for their games. It seems like there's some general attitude on the internet where people get all nasty if a developer hates when people play their hard work without paying for it but get all up in arms if they're like "YAY PIRATE OUR GAME."

I can't say I disagree with them. Piracy can have an effect on sales, even more-so for niche games.

Speaking from personal experience, there are games that I would have bought had there not been the option to pirate it. While not every pirated game = lost sale, I would argue that there are some who would have bought x game if you couldn't pirate it.

Renegade Kid has a right to their opinions, just as others have a right to their opinions on how Renegade Kid's games aren't all that great in the first place.

Willing to bet that if it could be grabbed for free, a lot more people would play their games. While some of those new players would buy, not all would.

However, wasn't it said that for the DS, the piracy rate was something under 10% of total users? I don't remember the exact rate, but if a thousand people wanted to buy a game I put out, and 100 grabbed it for free, I'd still be looking at those 900 buyers with gratitude, not be ripping on 100 or so cheap fucks (or broke-ass fucks).

But, unlike the DS, the 3DS can be updated, exploits patched, and the big bad N can teabag those nasty pirates (or brick the machines, which might be preferable)...so, in the end, who gives a shit? Hackers gonna hack, the average 3DS owner isn't going to know how to do it or even care....and piracy will still be low enough for the shovelware crowd to put out My Pony Orgy 3D XVII in a year or two.

He stated his opinion. Give him a cookie, pat him on the back, and find someone with a clue to listen to next time.

I think this thread should be closed before it gets too late. I'm pretty sure as time goes on, this site just proves that we aren't able to have a discussion without someone completely derailing it, and then everyone trying to shove their opinions down everybody's throats and state them as facts.

This is the first post in this thread that's off-topic. Well done.

You are off-topic as well ,but anyway...

Would there be enough people who can and would buy the game if it wasn't for piracy make that much of a difference?

While they could move their games to the wii u, future ps4/720, and possibly vita, what would they do once they are all fully hacked?

I'm pretty sure I'll get flamed for this but there's nothing wrong with a dev wanting to make money from their games. While I think the arguments against piracy are flawed you can't honestly believe that it has no negative effect on sales (and don't even tell me it increases them) when the only type of buyer in the market for their niche-games is probably the one invested enough in gaming to even have a clue about "hacking" their consoles.

lol he makes it sound so easy to become a developer! "Instead of using homebrew, just magic up some development skills, spend several thousand dollars on 3DS developing equipment, and make a name for yourself!" What a ridiculous man. He doesn't even consider why Dementium 2 didn't sell well, in reality. He doesn't consider that Dementium wasn't a good game, and no matter how good the second game seemed to be, I'm sure a large number were driven away by the fact that the first game was simply craptastic. Nice when looked at as kind of an experimental project, but I'm sure DS owners didn't purchase the game for a repetitive experimental experience that wouldn't actually be doctored up until the second game. He doesn't consider potential region issues (which the game had plenty in Europe if you read some of the comments in the blog), and instantly says piracy is the plague of sales everywhere. He doesn't even seem to understand that it's hard to break into the developing business, and most homebrew coders don't seem to have any interest in professionally distributing their work. They make it for fun, show it off, and get praise if it's entertaining and/or useful. Not everybody that can dig through and create some code from scratch is looking to be a professional developer, an assumption he clearly makes.

The problem ultimately lies in the fact that nobody really has actual numbers for piracy. We guess, count download numbers on various sites, and try to calculate sales losses. The fact is, it's absolutely impossible to even somewhat accurately guess the impact of piracy on the video game industry. We can't figure out who maybe had to download multiple times for various reasons. We don't know how many people ran out and bought that game once they had the chance. There is simply no way to even fathom the impact of piracy. It's just a scapegoat for bad sales, and it always will be.
"My game didn't sell well? Well, I made it, so obviously it's a good game, so pirates are to blame!"

Do developers ever consider the fact that they dig their own graves?

If I could afford the games, and I can't pirate it, yes, I'll buy it. Why not? I can afford it comfortably, plus it might actually be fun.

However, if I can pirate the game, I MOST LIKELY WILL NEVER PAY FOR A GAME. EVER. Even if I can comfortably afford it. Unless I somehow consider it to be a collector's item or some such. I'm pretty sure a huge chunk of GBAtemp members probably is in the same boat, whether they admit it or not.

It's... free. Paid quality versus free quality is a no-brainer. And this kind of consumer mindset can actually run a business down.

I can understand his concerns, but I think his claim that D2 was killed by piracy is a little unfounded. It was an M rated FPS on the DS (that's like a niche of a niche, on the DS), and its predecessor got "eh, ok" reviews. I think it's pretty believable that the sequel just didn't sell well. It certainly isn't the first good-reviewed game that sold poorly, nor is it the last. Heck, I've never even HEARD of this game until reading this story, and never even heard of Renegade Kid until Mutant Mudds, for that matter.
