Today I traded in some games for a 20 buck eShop card for Trine 2 and a copy of ZombiU new.

Even though I've heard mixed stuff about ZombiU, I was really interested.

And all I did was trade in FFXIII, Assassin's Creed 3, Mass Effect 2 and 3 and Paper Mario Sticker Star.

I hated FFXIII and AC3, Paper Mario was boring as hell, and I'm getting the trilogy collection of ME so it was worth it. But it was enough to cover the game because apparently there was a special of 20 bucks off Ubisoft games. I also bought a WiiU eShop card and bought Trine 2.

Opinions on either game?

ZombiU has by far been the most interesting looking launch title for the system, actually the only game I'd actively add to my "pros" list for the Wii U.

I've heard some mixed things about it, although critics aren't too reliable it seems. It kinda falls into that God Hand category of critics loving the difficulty and others whining about it. Yahtzee on Zero Punctuation actually had a really good review on it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/6647-ZombiU

I know some fanboys may get themselves all riled up on his ragging on the Wii U but he brings up a lot of good pros and cons on the game regardless and some legitimate criticisms. The one that stood out to me is that it does eventually reach a difficulty stagnation where, with experience and equipment, the game no longer tries to throw curveballs at you and it becomes a cakewalk, whereas other games will throw something new at you at this point to keep it fresh.

EDIT: And key off topic quote:

"The Wii U's controller is a solution looking for a problem."

I have been playing ZombiU for about 4 days now and I have say it's one of the better Zombie games that I have played in recent years. It's not the best one, but compared to the shit we have been getting, it stands out.

I find the problems it does have (for me personally there is very little to loot, like not even the trash cans have anything in them,) but that is often outweighed by some of the better aspects of the game, like how it's both genuinely scary and fun.
The only critic on trusted on this game was Yahtzee, because unlike most of the other critics out there, I am pretty sure he's the only one who actually knows what he's talking about.

I have not played Trine 2 yet, but I should be getting it next week.

That was a good film. Too bad it's hard to find now.

Also, is the game more survival than actual action? If so that'd be sweet. I don't mean survival horror like Resident Evil, but limited ammo type stuff.
It is pretty much all survival, running into battle could cost you your life in a matter of seconds. It's just as they described it, one bite, you're dead and you start as new person from there. And ammo isn't something you commonly find, so you need save your bullets. So yeah, it's not as action based as a game like Resident Evil.

From what I've heard, much, much more so.

It's closer to survival horror (actual survival horror, not "some scary shit and limited ammo at times") than any zombie game in years.

I've had the pleasure to play both (and many other Wii U games, my friend is 27 and she still lives at home so is LOADED with cash, really is the best person to hang around with when it comes to console launches) and yeah these are must haves for the console. Trine 2 I could not see wanting to play with any control method than keyboard & mouse but the Wii U controls are so damn nice, really good looking too. To be fair, still best to grab it on Steam if you have the means as the so called exclusive levels are apparently DLC on it now and all still cost much less than the Wii U version even though that's on Sale now but whatever, if you don't have a PC to play it and you have a Wii U...fucking get it!

ZombiU isn't perfect, I can easily see them make a sequel that is fantastic (like they did with Red Steel II) but they've done some very fresh things with zombie games AND with the survival horror genre, it actually FEELS like a proper survival horror game. Seems a bit easy at first but then you just seem to let your guard down and you just get taken. Then when you're prepared you just kinda play it safe. It's been a good long while since I last played a game where I did that, the only time you really want to go out guns blazing is when you have no other choice. Seriously, give this an extra 4 months of dev time and they could have made a masterpiece.

I have it on Steam.

Also it sounds like I might have fun with ZombiU. I was watching the Machinima series Two Best Friends Play of it and it looks fun. Speaking of which, here's the video if any of you want to see it, considering it's like my new favorite thing to watch on YouTube:

I have ZombiU and it's a welcome entry into the zombie genre of games.

Ammo is scarce. If you don't use your cricket bat almost exclusively, it's easy to run out of ammo and not have any when you encounter two or more zombies (in which case you're fucked if they see you).

I play it MGS-style with lots of sneaking around and quietly taking zombies out one at a time whenever the situation allows it.

I like how when you die, a new survivor takes over and you have to kill the previous character (now zombified) in order to get the equipment back. The only qualm I have about it is that you never get attached to the characters and it doesn't really allow for any kind of character development or plot.

I just started on a second run (this time on normal, rather than 'chicken'). What stands out over many other games I've ever played is how much this game gets under my skin. The fact that your character has exactly one life plays a lot in this aspect. The fact that you've got to hunt that character and kill him/her...it's just sad (but in a good way).

I know I've said it before, but zombiU isn't a game you play for the "fun" (there's a youtube video of extra creditz on "beyond fun". This is a prime example). You play it for the experience. Mushroom kingdom, WoW middle earth, ...fuck, even final fantasy worlds...they just don't seem as real as that plague-filled London.

And yes, it's survival horror. And pretty hard if there are more than one zombie in the area. Saying that ammo is scarce is an understatement. It's better to say that there just aren't any bullets, save for a few exceptions.
It's also perhaps just me, but other survival horror games I've played balance things out by having bad controls (which is somehow called realism...because it's realistic your character bounces into everything). This game balances things by having lots of blind spots (you've got to check the tv AND the pad) and having to beat every zombie up the head for 3 or 4 times (which is pretty long, considering swings take time). I can see how the latter gets frustrating, as you'll usually get scratched or even killed if you miss even a single swing.

All in all, I think most of the reviews are mixed because those reviewers don't see the game for what it is but rather from what they wanted to see.

Yes, I want to be able to kill zombies with one single smack as well, or being able to deliver them much faster. But if the makers had given that...they would have killed a large part of the mood.

(Christ...an ING reviewer even disliked the fearsome cries (edging to insanity) your character makes when hitting someone. He downright misses the point that THIS ISNT AN ACTION GAME. You're not supposed to be LIKING killing zombies. Those were your neighbors!).

For trine 2...I've also given my opinion on it somewhere. It's fun, has some interesting mechanics and is (IMO even a tad too much) beautiful. But I constantly feel like I just don't understand the controls. Or the way I should be thinking. I'm solving practically every problem by building some boxes or planks...world of goo style. But the touchpad isn't a proper replacement of the mouse (and I haven't even played the PC version, mind you). Boxes are often misalligned, out of shape or position, or things like that. Oh, and the gamepad screen is a tad too small to get all the details, but the larger screen doesn't quite allow for proper controls (unless you TOTALLY don't want to know where your boxes are gonna land).

I don't have ZombiU (but I want it), but from what I hear, if you go into the game with the expectation of how current Resident Evil games operate, then you'll be sorely disappointed.
Or really pleased that the game didn't turn out to be crap like the recent RE games have been. RE has really strayed greatly away from what makes a Survival Horror game and now mostly focuses on action and no longer treat zombies as a threat, but as something annoying and in the way.

When I started playing this game, it was breath of fresh air, in so many different ways. It really revolutionized the survival horror gameplay, by actually focusing on survival over action. Which added something new to what was becoming a stale genre thanks to games like the recent Silent Hill games, Resident Evil, Dead Space, ect. And to be honest, I really won't even compare it to them because ZombiU is really it's own game.

My first character died. I had to open some door and an alarm went off and I died.

It's taking me a while to get used to the controls and just the way everything handles.

Surprisingly I haven't seen any grafitti by other players or anything, so I'm a bit bummed, was hoping to see some fun stuff.
