How to play GameCube games off a USB HDD.

Welcome to my guide! This will teach you to "backup" your games that you TOTALLY legally own. Right?
This guide is completely compatible with Windows, Mac (Wine), and Linux (Wine). I do not have access to an Apple machine, but theoretically, it should work. Please note that this guide requires you to format your HDD, however you can still use it for storage after we're done, so just back it up before we begin.

NOTE BY A MODERATOR :

There are different methods to play Gamecube games off a USB HDD, and this outdated guide will only tell you ONE method.
It will not explain to you how to run gamecube games from USB HDD, but instead will tell you to do things blindly and install specific outdated files and use a specific outdated USB Loader version.
It doesn't cover other USB HDD methods or other Gamecube loaders.
Don't follow this guide if you want updated informations, updated loaders or if you want to use a different gamecube loading method.

You can follow it only if you want DIOS MIOS 2.8 (outdated) and CFG Loader v70 r36 (outdated).
Thanks for reading,
Cyan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will need:
-An SD Card
-A USB HDD
-Wii Mote
-GameCube Controller
-A Wii with Homebrew Channel installed
-A GameCube iso

Download Links:

COMPUTER:

1.) Download WiiFlow from the Download List above. Put it in the apps folder of your SD Card.

2.) Download the DIOS MIOS v2.8 RAR. Go to 'DM', then move 'DIOSMIOS_2.8' to the root folder of your SD card, or for easier installation put it in a folder on the root titled 'wad'.

3.) Download MMM, and put it in your apps folder.

4.) In the DM folder in the RAR, there will be a file named DMToolbox.exe, run it, select your games iso file, and choose where you want the game's folder to go (Desktop will do.). Hit 'Install', and the folder will appear where you wanted it to, it will be named the game's ID, which will, to you, appear to be a bunch of random characters.

5.) Download and Install EaseUS Partition master, and open it. Find your HDD, and right click it, and select 'format'. Format it as FAT32 with 32KB Clusters. *DON'T IGNORE! Press OK, and then "Apply".

6.) Look at your empty HDD, and make a 'games' folder. Put the folder with the Game ID in there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WII:

1.) Plug in your HDD in USB Slot 0. Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch MMM.

2.) Choose WAD Manager on the menu and install DIOSMIOS_2.8.wad

3.) After you're done, exit MMM. Launch WiiFlow.

4.) Go to Settings, and change game partition to USB1

5.) Press 'B', and select the Gamecube icon

7.) Choose a game and press Start. Every time you add new games, you have to hit the home icon, and hit update cache, and your game list will refresh.

Congratulations! You can now play GC games from your USB HDD!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFG USB LOADERv70 r36:

COMPUTER:
Follow steps 3-7 in the COMPUTER guide above.

WII:

1.) Follow step 3 in the guide above.
2.) Install DIOS MIOS using MMM.
3.) Launch CFG USB Loader.
4.) Click the icon with tools on it
5.) Set "DML Version" to DM.
6.) Launch your game!

Thanks for the answer. I posted my problem in a different part of the forum, and I guess it was because my game was PAL. But I do have another question, which is how do you change the video mode for the game? I think I did that, and it didn't work, but I may not have been doing it right, so...yeah.
That depends on what loader you're using but there should be an option like "DML video mode" in the general and/or per-game settings for it.
Well, there were only 3 options. DML Auto, DML none, and the game's region.

I have installed and uninstalled Dios Mios 1.1 and 2.2 and a bunch of of different cios and nothing...I cant get anything to launch from a USB drive....either it reboots or just boots the disc that is in the drive. I have yet to see any concrete evidence that its possible to launch a Gamecube Game grom a USB drive....The Wii I am working with is a LU64+ unfortunately and system 4.3 would really like to get boot 2 and 1 access back on this one...but no dice.....No response to this goes to show that Dios from USB is a bunch of shit....

I would guess It's DML Auto but that sound like you're using CFG and I don't have much experience with that one.(If Auto doesn't work, go ahead and try all of them. No harm in trying.) :P

1.1 was DML (SD only) 2.2 needs you to have the latest BETA version of some loaders for it to work and on others it needs you to set an option for it not to just boot what's in the drive (or get an error when there's not a GC game in the drive)

What version of what loader are you using?

Also, You need to make sure you have a clean BC v6 installed and there are a bunch of other specifics about how your HDD needs to be partitioned for it to work. What format is yours in? (including sector size) and if it's the first partition or not.

Hi everyone, Ive just recently joined and Ive been having problems trying to get gamecube games to play on my black wii, I followed the steps as mentioned, everything seemed to go to plan but when i launch the zelda the wind waker via usb loader gx it comes up with this message: - ''Fatal Error Apploader Size Is Zero!''

I've looked all over google to try to solve this problem as to why this error comes up and its driving me mad to the point I may give up trying to play gamecube games. On the other hand when I soft modded my wii, it lets me play Wii games totally fine. No issues there, so far ive played mario kart, need for speed run, super smash bro brawl and mario and sonic and the Olympics. No issues with those games which i run from a wbfs via neogamma channel.

Is there anyone out there that has had that error message come up before and what would i need to do to solve this problem please? Could you run me through if possible, what i would need to install, uninstall etc.

Thanks for helping, Dan.

The latest RELEASE version of GX is 3.0 and it was released before GameCube through USB was even possible. Even AFTER that, both DM and DML changed their config versions so for GX (and CFG) you'll need the latest BETA version in order to use them. You can get it here for GX (r1204) :

no dice. the "incorrect config" thing is gone after replacing the boot.dol file. When I launch, it goes to a screen with a gamecube logo. Under the logo it says "DIOS MIOS". After that it just goes black. I'm pretty much done with this. Sounds like BS to me.

Yeah, just a black screen can mean so many things. :(
are you using all the default settings?
is the game the same region as your wii?
did you just use the full sized game ISO or did you trim / extract it to make it smaller?
does it do it with every game you've tried?

i've tried with two games mario sunshine and wind waker. The .gcm were 1.35 GB ntsc. I used diskEx as per OP's instructions (drag and drop). They were NTSC U.

I don't know what you mean by "default settings". I guess so, since i didn't fiddle with anything else.

That's odd. Both of those work fine for me (the PAL versions, anyhow.) My only suggestion would be to try renaming the GCM file to "game.iso" and replace the existing "game.iso" file in the folders you have on your wii. For example
zelda.gcm -> game.iso
mario.gcm -> game.iso
put it in USB1:/games/somefoldername/game.iso
replacing the existing file.
sometimes unaltered disk images work the best. Otherwise not sure what to tell you. It's always some stupid little detail but you can never tell what it is.

DiskEx changes gcm automatically to "game.iso". So that's not it. Thanks anyway

On Step 2, how do I know which version I should use? I used the ModMii installer, and it seems like it's using IOS236, which isn't an option? Should I just try all of them and hope one works, or is there a way to tell?

EDIT: Alright, I found it in the settings. Feelin' kind of dumb, but whatever
I've got everything set up, but when I launch my game, it gives me the DIOS MIOS splash screen, and says
"Incorrect config version. Please update your loader!"

that message means the loader (wiiflow, GX, CFG, Postloader) you have isn't a new enough version to be compatible with the latest DM(L) version. For GX and CFG, that needs to be the latest BETA version because the latest release version is too old. If you're using something other than those four, they're not updated anymore and you need to use an older version of DM(L) if you can find one.

Hey there. I am having some serious issues getting this to work. First off -

My wii is a Black 4.3E system, and I recently hacked it using the mauifrog "hack any wii" guide, which worked flawlessly.
I can play snes roms etc perfectly and also yesterday got the wii backup feature working no problems at all, tried MarioKart, LOZ Skyward sword & Twilight Princess, all fine.

The SD card i am using is Formatted to FAT32 with 32kb clusters and the USB HDD i am using has 2 partitions, 1 formatted to WFBS, and 1 formatted to FAT32 with a 32kb cluster size (this is set to primary active, and named USB1, although shows up in USBLoader GX as USB2 for some reason).
My Gamecube backups are .gcm files, converted to .iso's using DiscEx and then dragged & dropped onto the FAT32 partition under the Games folder (do i need to use a specific installer for these like i do for wii games using the WFBS Manager??)
I followed this guide to the T. Figured out i have ios249 and replaced it using the modified boot.dol and boot.elf files.

At this point, i could go into Homebrew section, open USBL ex, it would recognize the Gamecube iso's and i'd click on them, click "run from usb" and the screen would just go black, no DIOSMIOS logo, no NGC logo, just black. The Wii controller goes off at this point and won't go back on until i pull the power from the back of the wii, or hold the power button for 5 seconds.

I have tried using all of the updated USBEx files, right up to R1204 and its all the same, black screens and nothing else. Doesn't matter either if i have a wii game in the disc drive or not.

Because my system is a European model, would the fact that the iso's are NTSC be making any problems? Should i be messing around with the settings within USBLoader GX?

Now, is there anything obvious i am missing? Ive bought a second Wii and a Wavebird controller just for the ability to play these backups so i really really want to get these on the go. Thanks :D

Okay, you're main problem here is that your FAT32 partition is showing up as USB2 because it's the SECOND partition in the MBR (and probably the second in order on your drive physically.) You can LABEL your drive whatever you want but the USB1, USB2, USB3, etc that shows up in the USB Loader program is just to show the order of the partition.

The partition you load GameCube games from with DM(L) just HAS to be the 1st one in the MBR. Fortunately there's a way to quickly swap them without having to reformat and repartition everything. You can get info on that here :
http://gbatemp.net/threads/changing-the-partition-order-in-a-faster-way.329862/
As an alternative, you can also convert you're WBFS partition to FAT32 without loosing any of the games (in a matter of seconds, actually) with this :
http://gbatemp.net/threads/wbfs2fat-py.291320/
USB Loader GX (and most modern USB Loader apps) can read Wii games just fine off of a FAT32 partition, too. It's only if you're ALSO using something older like uLoader that it won't work the same (uLoader can also read from FAT32 but it just uses a different file format to store the games.)With the 1st partition converted you can just put the GameCube games on there as well. With GX, too, there's an option to show all partitions so you could put some Wii games on the second partition as well to make space for the GameCube games on the 1st partition if needed.
