Just returned home for the weekend from Uni only to find my Ps3 doesn't work.
Whenever I turn it on it says that the file system in the system storage is corrupted and it tries to restore it.
When it reaches 100% it goes into this limbo state with a black screen, green power light and the controllers turn off.
Nothing changes no matter how long I wait and when I try to turn it off and back on again it gives me the same system is corrupted message and tries to restore it again!
Please tell me there is a way to fix this or at the least, be able to rescue my save data.
The model is the old phat 80 gig version.

Maybe try a new hard drive? Anyway, doesn't sound like a brick. You wouldn't get any message then.

Tried safe mode.
The restart system option freezes everything when I select it.
The Restore File System and Rebuild Database just get stuck on the "preparing" screen with no sign of it changing.

I read online that I might be able to save my data by using dd and a spare hard drive.
Does that sound like my only option if I wanna keep my save data?

Wow, superb necrobump :P

Without a HDD isn't a solution, you may need a spare one build in and then reinstall the current OS via safe mode...

I'll try to help, even if it is a necrobump, but a message should appear with no hdd saying that system storage can't be found. this is fixable with a hard mod like e3, but afaik it only works with cfw type systems. I don't know for 100% that it works with 3 and 4K, because you can't downgrade on those systems due to new, unknown keys. I don't even think it works if you're installing the same firmware.

I replaced my thermal paste on my Cech2504b with liquid metal some time ago and booted after the assembly without the Hdd (by mistake). I got a blackscreen, no message at all (shocked me, thought its a brick), until I connected the hdd back in the PS3. Maybe it takes some time until that message about the system storage pops up? Idk.

iirc, it doesn't take much time at all. I've booted my system without an hdd before to see what would happen. there's an image of the screen on devwiki if you look up hdd I believe. it should be almost instant, because 90% of the flash is on the hdd if using a NOR system. there may be a difference in speed between models, but it's probably marginal.

Ok, maybe my television set doesn't like that screen resolution and caused a black screen

I dunno. that would at least give him hope that it's not bricked. buying an e3 isn't really worth it nor is sending it to someone. ps3 slims that are cfw compatible are probably around $80 (maybe a little more depending on hdd). the slim I bought after my first one was banned, I bought for $90 a few years ago. I had forgotten to ask about the hdd, but it came with no screws to the hdd caddie, and the hdd was only 50GBs. I replaced it with it with a 1TB and added my own screws. it's served me well, but I no longer play it. I rarely play any system I hack or exploit.
