Hardware Just bought a PS3 and can't even play the damn thing!

OK, So I finally broke down and bought a PS3. I bought the 500GB Assassin Creed III bundle, I hooked it all up and inserted the Grand Toursimo 5 disc and it has been all most an hour and I still can't play it. All it is doing is loading the game and installing updates. What it is doing now, has been going on for awhile and it is still only 50% done.

What ever happen to just putting in the disc and playing the damn game?

Gran Turismo 5 is the King of Update Cockblocking, trust me. DO NOT INSTALL THE GAME ITSELF ONCE IT BOOTS as it will take another couple of hours. But yeah it has like 2.5GB of updates to download and install.

you should have got the academy edition, it has all the updates on disc, and get used to patch updates you are going to see this a lot on the ps3.

In terms of content for value, GT5 is a crowd pleaser. Already clocked a couple hundred of hours in that game already and still there's so much i want to do.

You could get Playstation Plus, I think it download updates by itself at night instead of you having to wait for them every time you want to play your game (PAIN is a pretty bad offender as well)

If its a update then you'll have to wait man,I had a very similar problem when I bought GT5,anyways once its done updating its gonna be hell a lot of fun for car lover's,lol that's why we play GT5 in the first place don't we?if its taking long it because of your internet speed.

I had the same experience when I got my PS3 years back but it was probably worse because back then PSN was uber slow. I remember waiting almost three hours for my PS3 to update to the latest firmware (on a very speedy connection), and after that I had the misfortune of trying to play MGS4. I had to probably wait another hour or more for all of its updates to download and for the game to install itself.

Fun times, but that's modern consoles for you.

The thing that annoys me the most about these updates is that if you download something from PSN it's NOT the latest version so you STILL have to update it when you try to launch it >_>

Seriously, Sony... look at how Steam does it... and how they deliver the latest build of the game for new buyers so that they don't have to worry about patching or anything. DO IT LIKE THAT, MORONS!

Not only it's your first boot, you also chose a game which happens to have one of the biggest Data Installs there are... not to mention that On-Disc games also download Updates... So yeah. This is not unusual and it's only going to happen once, so why so much rage?

As I understand it, Gran Turismo 5 is infamous for its ridiculously fucked up install requirements. Its required pauses for installing this or that to the hard disk is one of the primary reasons or arguments toward having an SSD in a PS3, since that's one game that seems to only be tolerable with one.

You seem to severely lack technical knowledge, the installation is only slow because it's initially from the BluRay disc itself - then the game is played, for the most part, from the Hard Drive using Install Data. Changing to SSD won't solve anything - the BluRay is the bottleneck. As for Steam, it provides the latest build, fair play, but that's because they distribute their content online. Sony distributes the latest versions of games online as well - it so happens that they often patch them, which is a huge bother when save exploits surface. That, and your signature doesn't exactly make you look legitimate.

Yeah, it sucks, but you know what? It will only be a few hours out of your life. I doubt you'll rage quit and take the PS3 back just because of you can't play your games right away, so you'll just deal with it. Just like everyone else has. Welcome to the club. It has a rough initiation, but once you're in, you're pretty much family.

And that's because - at least from the breakdown - GT5 likes to install the game, and have separate install sessions for different cars and tracks. Honestly, with how they broke it down, it sounded a lot worse than how MGS4 requires a separate installation for every different act that you decide to play. It pretty much makes those one-time, super-large installs that some games make sound like we're getting off easy by comparison.

And Gran Turismo 5 is a large game. Not quite as physically large as God of War 3 (which measured at 40GB's on this database vs. GT5's 19GB of data ), but you'd think the guys at Polyphony would have figured out a more elegant way of handling it, like so many of Sony's third-party devs have been able to do. My ideal would be no required installs whatsoever, but given that Sony did rather shoehorn the slowest possible BD drive in a PS3 just to validate that part of the company's reason to exist, I'm still surprised that every game doesn't just have mandatory installs.

Oh, trust me - I'm well-aware of Gran Turismo's problems. What I was saying was that the installation would've been far quicker if the optical drive was faster - the HDD does pay a role here as well since access times on SSD are substantially faster, however most of the blame can be put on the slow BluRay drive and the game's structure.

I remember when I actually tried to install the full game in one go to improve loading times - the option is somewhere in the options I think. It was like: Installing, 30 minutes remaing. Me: Oh, that's not that bad, guess I'll come back in 20 minutes and see how it's doing. 20 minutes later: Installing, 30 minutes remaining, and the progress bar had moved like 5 pixels to the right or something. About two hours later it was finally nearly done and it said "3 minutes remaining". 15 minutes later it said "5 seconds remaining" and another 10 minutes later I could finally play the damn game. Longest 5 seconds of my life. And when I went to the PS3 data to see how big the install actually was, it just sat on "Calculating size" for about 10 minutes before I finally decided to give up.
