I ordered a psp 1000 maybe 1001 off ebay. in the mean time i'd like to know is it mandatory for i to have a pandora battery? the seller told me the psp has the latest firmware (haven't received psp yet still in mail and can't confirm what firmware is on psp).
do i need a magic stick - or can i use the usb cord and the *sd* stick it comes with?
after installing a custom firmware can i still hook the psp up to the tv to play games and movies?

i just found out the 1000 model is 32 ram.

does the 32meg ram effect shmup genises and super nintendo emulation games? (lots of moment on screen slowed down my ds emulation of the snes) can i play mame 32 games with the 32meg ram instead of 64? i have my hopes up on playing some cave games with the psp 1000

The Genesis and SNES emulators, as far as I know, aren't affected.

MAME and other "higher" systems, however, I'm not sure on.

Also make sure that the slowdown wasn't part of the actual system. Actual games would slowdown on an actual SNES if too much was going on, and good emulation would reflect that by slowing down as well.

because the 1000 has 1.50 kernel it should be better for emulation

also the 1000 has infra red (use it as a remote control!)

the memory will hardly be a problem

you can downgrade the psp without pandora battery

and you can run any custom firmware

i'd recommend 5.00 m33-6 - especially good for emulation and ps1 games and it also has the best custom themes

So someone like me who has bought a pandora battery has what benefits vs someone who doesn't?
The ability to reflash the PSP's firmware, so you can unbrick it if an update goes back, or you can downgrade it with less limits.

Assuming you're on a PSP 1000 or earlier 2000 model... if you're on a later 2000 or any 3000 or Go, the Pandora is useless, it can't be used with those models.

when you mess with the flash (flash0, 1, 2, 3) a lot, or in the wrong way, is when you could brick

so if you are experimenting with that kind of thing or trying out many apps that flash, especially unknown sources, beta versions, etc., then it is good to have a pandora battery and a magic memory stick handy if needed

also if you want to use something like Time Machine then a pandora battery is needed

btw, you can order an extra battery for $2 if you look around! i couldn't believe it..
if you are able to order from amazon there are bargains on there
i can't in australia but on ebay you can buy them straight from china
even if not from china i can get one from an australian seller for $7
i've ordered a $2 one and will use my current one as a pandora, and the cheap one for normal use

it's kind of new for me too and i want to try time machine and also resizing the flash partitions
but first i'll wait for the other battery to get delivered

Just looked up time machine & it doesn't really have that much of an appeal right now seeing as I'm on cFW 6.60 pro-c I honestly don't see a whole lot of homebrew for the PSP maybe I'm missing something?

It seems if it's not S/NES then the other emulators seem to have compatibility issues :( & I couldn't find a media center type homebrew app which is mostly what I'm interest in.

Anyone know any handbrake scripts optimized for PSP movie conversions?

So is there any recommened homebrew apps that are appealing to average users?

First off, get JAVA KVM for the PSP. Believe it or not, using Opera for browsing is a zillion times more intuitive than using the built-in Netfront one. If you're adamant to use Netfront, get the modded version, Netfront 4 Beta which unlocks full memory access for the browser, Go!Tube allows you to browse Youtube in a limited fashion, however with just 32MB RAM it might be a... painful experience... and then there's truckloads of emulators, of course!

There's a handful of plugins you might want - Audio Boost (makes the PSP louder, of course), Remote Joy Lite (allows you to use a miniUSB cable to control your PSP with a keyboard and transfer video to your PC), POPS Loader (If you're interested in PSX games, getting and setting up this plugin is an absolute must) and some plugins to categorize your content, like Game Categories. If you're planning to play Online, it also might be a good idea to get either PRO-C and use their online plugin or join XKai Link - this will allow you to play over the internet, even if a given game is AdHoc Only, just like PS3 AdHoc Party.

The PSP has loads to offer homebrew-wise - everything depends on what you're looking for, so I gave you the barebones version.

Homebrew:
  1. Audio Boost
  2. Remote Joy Lite
  3. POPS loader
  4. Game Categories
Alright I'll check out those 4 POPS loader huh... So I should just avoid the guide here? or is it ment to be used in conjunction with it?

You need to convert all PSX games regardless of whether or not you use POPS - thing is, different firmware versions have different compatibility with PSX titles, and POPS allows you to choose different "Emulator Cores" from different firmwares, enhancing the compatibility substantially.

oh that is freaking awesome! Thanks for the heads up albeit honestly I'll probably only convert LSSS, LEB, FF7, FF8, LoD hm... yep only games I truely enjoyed back in PSX times.

For games that have an official release on PSN, it's recommended to just pirate the PSN version since it's been officially edited by Sony for compatibility already.
Assuming they only did the major titles I mentioned I'm guess I'm out of luck on LSSS, LEB, or LoD; thanks for the advice.

I sincerely suggest having a look at the entirety of the PS1's library - there's a whole lot of titles you might've missed and it'd be a shame if you only ever used this feature for the three you listed. I regularily look for new "gems" and I've not been disappointed so-far - the PSP allowed me to play such classics as Parasite Eve, Armored Core or Diablo, for instance (previously I only had Diablo 2, but I remember playing Diablo on my friend's PS1 back in the day).
