Does this thing have any potential for GCN emulation at all? What about this remote play thing? Can I buy a PS3 and emulate gamecube on that and then play through remote play? Is there a way I can just remote play my damn Wii/Gamecube?

Just wanted to get an idea of what's going on here.

The general rule of thumb to emulate a console you must have at least 9x the power in order to do so. The PS3 doesn't come very close to that for the GCN at all.
....So you're telling me the PSP can emulate the N64 fairly well, making it 9 times as powerful.....but the PS3 can't do even LAGGY gamecube emulation?

The Gamecube was exceptionally powerful for it's time, I believe. It was certainly more impressive than the PS2, so it's not that much of a surprise that the PS3 can't emulate it very well even though it can emulate the PS2.

The PSP barely emulates the N64.

I won't go into very technical details, as I can see you probably wouldn't understand it anyways, so I'll keep it simple. The entire 6th generation of game consoles is hard to emulate. For instance, we have a GCN emulator that doesn't have perfect compatibility, a PS2 emulator with the same issue but on a bigger scale, and no Xbox emulator at all. (well, projects have sprung up but nothing too successful). The 9x as powerful rule is very general, as a lot of other things come into play as well, such as the different architecture of the CPU/GPUs (while the GCN ran off an early Power PC CPU [the PS3 using a more advanced PPC CPU], the GPU for the GCN isn't very well documented last I knew making it harder to emulate).

Wintrale, I think you just proved his point

My guess is, the PS3 definitely is capable of emulating the GameCube. I suppose not many hackers have a PS3 with custom firmware or enough time to bother porting a GameCube emulator to the PS3 where demand would be small anyway.

It's just not worth the trouble

Well if you wanna play on the TOILET then you could certainly install a TV and Wii/Gamecube in your bathroom :ha: But in all actuality like the others said there's really no way to do it with your Vita. Sorry man. :(

I think you're underestimating the jump in power from the N64 to the GC. Also a jump of one means a jump of an extra (estimated) nine times power for the emulating platform anyways, right?

So let's say that you have a computer that can emulate the N64 at triple speed, and the GCN is five times more powerful than the N64 (numbers pulled out of my ass for an example and that's just via core clocks which are inaccurate).

So N64 = 1, PC = 27.

But GC = 5, and PC = 27, and you need 45 to run fullspeed.

My computer (C2Q, Radeon HD 5770) can get a bit laggy with some of the special effects in super mario sunshine in Dolphin, and it's way more powerful than the PS3, let alone the Vita.

I vote the toilet TV idea.

Except if you find someone willing to spend his entire weeks coding a very very optimised emulator for PPC cpu on ARM (and of course the rest of the GC/Wii architecture, and it's custom undocumented features).

And all of this likely for free (or just a few buck via paypal donate).

Then it might happen... but it wont be full speed, the vita is indeed powerfull, but still not enough, if one day it gets some homebrew I'll already be very happy if it can acheive full speed Dreamcast emulation.

There's lots of how-to-make guides for portable Gamecubes out there, just google, and then be prepared to put lots of time and $$$ into the project.
