Well here an interesting question. How long do you think it will be before someone releases an N64 emulator for the 3ds? It rather obvious the 3ds can play N64 games (Zelda OOt and Starfox 64 anyone?) and seeing as a regular ds can play a slightly modified N64 game (super mario 64) then it is likely this is going to happen right? I mean it bound to happen at some point right?

Also can a current flashcart even support an .n64 game as they are? I'm going to upgrade anyway, but will they have to release a new flashcart just to play n64 games? I know this won't happen anytime soon, seeing as the 3ds seems to be kinda hax proof at the moment, but will it ever happen?

zelda ocarina of time 3D & Starfox 64 3D were on th N64, the 3DS version's has better graphics, so yes the 3DS can run N64 games.
not to mention if you compair screens to mario kart 64, mario kart DS, & Mario kart 7 3DS.
i wouldn't be surprised if nintendo released N64 Virtual console & 3D classics on 3DS(& wii u) when the Wii u is released. :ninja:

one game i wouldn't mind seeing ported from 64 to 3DS with 3D, multiplayer, & online is goldeneye 64. :D

There is a difference between a port/remake, and emulation. The 3DS does not play N64 games. The 3DS versions of OoT and SF64 are remakes. SM64 on the DS is a remake. The 3DS may have the capacity to emulate an N64, but we won't know that until the 3DS gets hacked to allow someone to write one up.

The 3DS has two 268MHz ARM11 cores, it wont be able to emulate N64 Games, even if, than almost unplayable.
There is a difference between an Emulation and a "rerelease" of an old N64 Games for the 3DS(Ocarina, Star Fox), where all code is written specially for the 3DS.

With a good dynarec and fast HLE graphics engine, I can totally see N64 games possible. However, the N64 emulation scene has been essentially dead for years, so I won't expect anybody to show up to make one when the 3DS gets homebrew.

No. The 3DS has no trouble emulating something like the SNES because the SNES only ran at 3.58MHz.
N64? Nope. Like manuel said, 268MHz dual core ARM11 is not fast enough. There are emulators for iOS/Android that can emulate N64, but then we're talking about more powerful SoCs with better graphics solutions...

Raw speed is only part of the equation for emulation. You also have to take the number of chips into coniseration and exactly how accurate you want the emulator to be. If someone makes an emulator from scratch, specifically with speed on the 3DS in mind, it could be possible to make a playable N64 emulator. Hell, UltraHLE was able to run on computers back in 1999 with way less than a Gigahertz of CPU speed.

The PSP is different Hardware, in Fact the Architecture is near to the N64.
But even with all this advantages, how many games dont work on the DX64? I could give you a big List.
Remmeber the first N64 Emulator for Windows, you could make it run on Pentium II or III, with around 400 MHZ, why? Because only Mario 64 worked and it was Specialized for exactly that game.

People said the CPU of the DSTwo could emulate the N64, yea sure, bullshit.
Even if it has 400 MHZ, its all about architecture. people must learn that!
I bet we wont see a working N64 Emulator, but the ps1 is quite possible.

Taken from Wikipedia:

This high-level emulation had its drawbacks. At the time of release, UltraHLE was only able to emulate approximately 20 games to a playable standard. The software only emulated and simulated the calls that were required for specific games; it was required to adapt the software for games that used different parts of the N64 hardware.

The emulation technique they used is different, I'll admit. However, UltraHLE had to be adapted for each specific game. Is anyone really going to take the effort to code support for each game?
Not to mention the graphics hardware.

Note that is says at release. Many emulators only play a handful of games "at release". Plus, the HLE method UltraHLE used is still the main way all most graphic plugins for N64 emulators work. The next time you play an N64 game on your emulator, check your CPU usage. For me, I can run Mupen64 at full speed on most games on about 1/3 of one core of my computer, and this is with a fancy graphics plugin and an interpreter CPU emulation. WIth a good enough dynarec, I'm certain that a decent enough N64 emulator is possible. I just have my doubts that anybody would be interested in doing one, since it would be a lot of work. Look at the Wii64 guys: They've been working on it for years and it still is far from perfect.

I'm more than sure the 3DS can handle PS1 and N64 games and why is this even a topic of discussion right now when no's hacked the damn thing yet lol!

Might I ask where this 268Mhz number came from?

Because you're wrong and its not possible. ps1 yes, but not n64. Not enough power and completely different architecture.

Either I'm missing where they say the actual frequency numbers, or that document simply describes the architecture, the ARM11 MPCore. Anyways, doing a little digging myself on that, I found this....

http://www.arm.com/products/processors/classic/arm11/arm11-mpcore.php

...which seems to suggest that it can run between ~400Mhz and ~800Mhz.

Yeah, a quick google search says the two 266Mhz CPUs spec is fake posted by IGN...

the ds can play gba games and n64 remakes therefore it can play n64 games, oh wait it can't. You see emulation is a tricky thing, just because a system is more advanced than another doesn't mean it can play it. Consoles are made to run at certain specs and unless the specs are exactly the same it can have a difficult time getting it to run, why well first they have to figure out how to compensate for the extra speed so the games don't run too fast, then tweak it so they don't run to slow, before they do this they have to program or port an emulator to the system which hasn't happened yet for the 3ds and won't happen for many years[I'm going for about 3 maybe 2 years if where lucky], n64 has always been a tricky beast as with many other consoles of the 90's, so honestly I doubt will ever have a fully functional n64 emulator on the 3ds [besides the best n64 games are already ported or will be ported]

I'm sure Nintendo could do it if they wanted to. Doubt they will though =/
