Last last CIB trip for a while
Photo
Sonic + Knuckles and Sonic Spinball didn't work absolutely perfect after a bit so I went up to CiB again today and traded them in for copies that do work. No charge.

I also FINALLY got my hands on a copy of sonic 1 for the game gear. It's the only main GG sonic I didn't have. Cost $7 which may seem a little overpriced but this game is REALLY hard to find, compared to most sonics, and the only other IRL chance I had to buy it, it was 10, and they didn't guarantee it worked. It was also in really bad condition. This one works and if it stops in 15 days I can trade it in for another copy or anything of equal value. Can't buy stuff online so it's the best deal I'll get for it.

As you can see here, this one's in great condition:

So here's recorderdude (godimaretardforjoiningaspersonuser) saying "Game On!" or some other generic phrase as the credits roll.

SEGAgeddon - One last CiB haul
Photo
So, seeing as CiB held a yearly sale today in which you get a free game of equal value for every two you buy, I figured it would be a good day to fill my genesis library.

In total I got:

Virtua Racing (in box w instructions!) for $2
Animaniacs for $5
Sega 6-Pak (has sonic 1 inside, along with streets of rage, revenge of shinobi, columns, super hang on and golden axe) for $5
Sonic 2 for $4
sonic 3 for $7
Sonic and Knuckles for $7
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for $6
Sonic Spinball for $4
Sonic 3D blast for $5

With the sale, I got Virtua Racing, Mean Bean Machine and 3D Blast for free. All work (well, SnK needs to be blown on prior to booting, but it works) and they all look pretty nice!

My funds are getting low, though, so this is the last time I'm going game hunting for a while.

I'm also still trying to repair the SEGA CD. I've reached this point, now:

I'm asking around and hopefully I can fix it.

Pics of all the games, then (including dynamite headdy since I haven't taken any pics of it yet):
a shiton of carts

So yeah. I'm done for a while. wish me luck with the SCD!

Fixing the SEGA CD, Part I
Photo
y'know how I was wailing about getting craigslist ripped off last week?

Yeah, I'm changing that.

I've been working on my SEGA CD all weekend and I've already made great progress in its repair.

For starters, I actually got the BIOS to boot up properly. As it turns out, the major problems at start were a misaligned disk drive and a detached ribbon cable. Both were a little testing to fix, but I was able to fix it up in the end.

The new problems I've got with the thing include a slightly misaligned drive (far easier to fix this time, just gotta screw around with it) as well as a constantly ejecting-closing disc drive. Apparently the fix for this is either a replacement of the rubber-band-like O ring belt or screwing around with the gears even more.

Tomorrow, I'll work on that.

Otherwise...progress! I'll get this sucker working yet.

Oh yeah. I also picked up a copy of dynamite headdy from CiB for $5. It's treasure, it's fun, it's amazing, what more can be said. Worth buying.

Craigslist Scammed
Photo
in my hunt for retro SEGA stuff, I was scammed.

I paid $50 for what I was convinced would be a working bundle of a SNES 2, Genesis 1 and SEGA CD 1, with 2 remotes for the SNES and genesis each and 4 SNES games, and that if anything was not working as I tested it my money would be refunded.

The SNES 2 had no sound, but rather a loud buzzing noise throughout.
The Genesis had a horrid picture and cart wobbling caused problems.
The SEGA CD had a broken disc drive, and just didn't load games at all.
And suddenly the seller won't come back.

Be smart.

Stay off of craigslist.

Now I have to see if there's any way I can make the money back selling this crap as "for parts".

The games are super punchout, kirby's avalanche, ms pac man and frogger, and all work fine on their own, if I can get anything for them maybe I can recoup my losses a little.

I honestly don't know, though.

Just stay off of craigslist.

The Haul that Got Away
Photo
So, I've been waiting all day for a response from a certain seller, and in the end, it turns out that an insane genesis lot I've been chasing...has already been sold.

and this isn't any standard lot.

Just look at this.

http://lancaster.cra...2882691637.html

a model 2, 2 controllers with a six-button pad being one of them

and 37 games, most AAA titles, with only TWO sports games.

I didn't even get a chance either. it was likely sold yesterday before I even saw the lot.

The rage of loss cannot be expressed with words.

On the plus, I did get a copy of silpheed for PS2 from CiB for $3, but...gah.

Goodwill Gameboy Grab - Rarity get?
Photo
Quick little stop at goodwill, and I find a classic gameboy bundled with two games for 10 bucks. I have a version of every other GB hardware, how could I resist?

It took a while to get the GB to work, and it's missing part of the battery cover's closing hatch, but eventually, with a bit of tape and a lot of patience, I got it powering on and playing stuff just fine, save for a few dead columns, a common issue with old GBs. A name sticker is plastered on top of it, most likely from its previous owner, but for respect of privacy I won't give the name here.

Warning! Spoiler inside.

Both of the games are in pretty much perfect condition with no visible damage to the labels or carts whatsoever. The two games I received with it were "Tecmo Bowl" which is a fun little football game (Yes, I just used the words "fun" and "football game" in one sentence.)

Warning! Spoiler inside.

and one other game...

"Battle Bull" (I think it refers to a battling bulldozer, who you play as?), in a little gameboy sized protective case.

This game, as far as I can tell, is made by SETA (also responsible for that HORRID Wizard of Oz game on SNES, though I can easily say this title is MILES better), and feels like a strategic version of SEGA's Pengo, in which you purchase upgrades for your vehicle which help you as you progress through harder and harder stages. Both carts work perfectly but I can barely find any info on this game. There's not even a wikipedia page on it!
Warning! Spoiler inside.

I've seen only THREE copies of it on eBay, an extremely low amount for a GB title: two were import versions, and one was an american version, but new in box. This, of course, means that I have no idea just how rare a loose copy is. Anyone got a clue?

Complete in Box Finds, Week 3
Photo
Didn't get a whole lot this week.

Picked up Psychic World for Game Gear for 5 bucks. Not bad, and the game's quite a bit of fun, like a SEGA Mega Man of sorts. It seems the previous owner had attempted to inscribe the word "dun" into the sticker with pen.

Got Grinch for GBC for $3 (rather good game, actually, like metal gear meets pacman and has a score of 9.0 at IGN)

Posted Image

I also picked up a new 3rd party Game Gear AC adapter for about ten bucks. Meh, didn't expect to get a steal on a size-specific AC adapter, and I got the thing new so there's no dips or cuts in the wire from years of childhood use and abuse. Not even mentioning the fact that if for any reason it screws up my game gear with its 10 volts instead of the printed-on-system 9, I've got 60 days to get a full refund on the console. Yes, the store gives you two months warranty on old, used consoles. CiB is just that awesome.

So yeah, that about wraps up my finds. Still going to be on the lookout for Game Gear (though I doubt I'll see any more anytime soon, as the last wave of GG stuff was likely one batch from a kid's traded-in library), GameBoy, PS1, PS2 and Gamecube but may consider picking up a model 1 genesis in the future and building a collection for that as well.

Also, can't wait till summer. Flea markets open, and then the REAL deals begin.

My Complete In Box finds, Week 2
Photo
I was wandering through, browsing shelves casually
When 'cross from the gameboys, I happened to see
a Classic old piece of SEGA hardware
I made up my mind, and bought it right there.

As you may have been able to tell by the above improv poetry, I got a SEGA Game Gear this week from complete in box.

The Game Gear was in pretty good condition, and ran me $20.

I also got 3 games for it, Sonic 2 ($3), Sonic Chaos ($4) and Sonic Triple Trouble ($5).

All the carts are in great condition and work well (or at least they do now after some contact blowing.)

My next goal is to get a working adapter for the thing so I don't deplete our battery supply.

I also picked up the original Tomb Raider on PS1 for 4 bucks, partially because I've never been able to get a non-legit version to work and partially because I want to see what all the praise of the series is all about (besides polygon breasts, of course.)

That's all for now!

The best used game store ever
Photo
So, I've been getting more into actually buying games lately, to build up a collection. Unfortunately, in the farm town I'm located in, finding and acquiring the games for a decent price can be...challenging. I'm not counting online purchases here, as for the most part they cost just as much to ship as to buy.

This all changed, however, this week.

A new game store opened up around ten minutes away from me called "complete in box", and it's the best game store I've ever been to.

The place has walls upon walls of games for pretty much every console and a nice little selection of portable titles as well.

But, hey, seems like it's just any old gamestore, right?

Wrong.

The place also has a freeplay arcade (currently there's tetris, SoulCalibur II, Smash TV and Marvel Vs Capcom machines there), as well as a "lounge" area with a SNES, NES and Genesis hooked up where you can try any corresponding game in the store to assure it works fine, or just to goof off, as long as you want.

The best part of all though is surely the challenges and competitions.

Next week there's a smash bros tournament, free entry and for all three smash games. Of course ,the prize is store credit.

The standard weekly challenges are pretty neat as well. This week's was to beat mario circuit 4 in 2 mins 2 seconds or less in the original super mario kart for $5 store credit (not OFF, CREDIT, meaning you could literally pick up a five-buck game and walk out with it for free if you complete the challenge) I couldn't conquer it (likely because how I forgot to grind dash in the original) but I did see a top times list of toads all with times around 1:59 so it's rather possible. Next week's is likely going to be besting mike tyson in punchout, which, while surely a feat, is far more doable for me :)

So yeah. I got some games of course:

Starfox adventures for $6
Sly Cooper 1 for $4
Jak 2 for $4
Rayman 1 for PS1 for $5

this is tax included, and all the discs were run through an industry buffer so they play flawlessly.

You can't buy these this cheap online even (again, considering shipping prices) so I'll certainly be a return customer.

Of course, some titles are a little overpriced (metroid II was $13...yikes) but for the ones that aren't it's a phenomenal deal.

Oh, they also have a ton of rare titles in quite often, as well as repro carts. They recently just sold an earthbound and there's a few rarities like skullmonkeys and SMRPG sitting in the cased-up section.

But yeah, my life just got a little better. Wish me luck for the smash tournament!...better brush up :P

Stuff that's happened

Salutations, Tempers and Tempettes.

It has been quite a while since I've been actively posting here, so I guess a catch-up post is neccesary.

During my absence, I've worked on a lot of music, including many "with lyrics" songs and a cover. One of these songs was done with "Mystical Pyro Freak", also known as one of the main voice actors for Amy and others in the Sonic Shorts volumes.

songs below:
Warning! Spoiler inside.

besides that, I've done a bit of art, and have been working on improving my artistic abilities. The left half of the picture seen in "pirate's island with lyrics" is my work (the other half is MPF's)

In my job, I've been doing quite well. I've been writing articles and reviews which were quite well-recieved, and I've been able to get out and meet a lot of interesting people, including an airplane pilot/instructor and a lot of teens with creative hobbies.

As for gaming (the main reason for most of us to be around) I've been playing a lot of PS2 and PSP titles. I am currently looking for a dreamcast, and hope to get one soon, as school starts for me on the 29th.

That's about all I've been up to, so yeah. I guess you'll see more of me around.

Peace out, temp.
