This falls out of the realm of normal video game discussion, sure, but Sony is involved, and I think this is big enough to warrant discussion here.
To put it simply, North Korea has been railing against Sony's upcoming film "The Interview," which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as two media types sent into the despotic regime to assassinate Kim Jong-Un (with wacky hijinks presumably ensuing). As retaliation, North Korea paid for a hack of Sony Pictures' database, leaking sensitive information such as private emails, employee's personal information, etc. Thing have only escalated from there when the hackers threatened to bomb theaters airing the film.
There's no telling exactly what the studio will do now. According to Wikipedia, the film cost $44 million (not including marketing, of course), and features performers ranging from James Franco and Seth Rogen to Eminem and Kanye West. It'd be almost unthinkable to imagine the company eating the costs and shelving it for good, but is VoD a viable option if theaters have refused to touch it?

Developed by Ninja Theory, DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition will include the original stylish action game, all previously released downloadable content, including the "Vergil's Downfall" campaign as well as brand new modes and additional gameplay features, making this the ultimate offering for Devil May Cry fans.
New to DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition, players will be able to play as Dante's twin brother himself in Vergil's Bloody Palace Mode. For an extra depth of challenge, players will be able to try out the added Gods Must Die and Must Style Mode as well as Hardcore Mode, which has been designed to play more like the classic Devil May Cry series. DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition players will also receive new Dante and Vergil costumes inspired by classic Devil May Cry character designs. The game's high quality production values will run at a stunning 1080p and smooth 60 fps across both next-gen consoles.
Balancing and improvements based on fan feedback from DmC Devil May Cry are being implemented into DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition, as well as modifiers that can be turned on at various stages, including Turbo Mode which allows players to increase the speed of play for even faster, more intense combat. Additional leaderboards, trophies and achievements will be included, as well as social features, taking advantage of both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One functionality.
DmC Devil May Cry sees Dante's origin story being retold against a contemporary backdrop. Dante is a young man with no respect for authority or society in general. He knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast. Thanks to his twin brother Vergil, leader of the anti-establishment group "The Order", Dante is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon and an angel. Combat and movement throughout the game are influenced by Dante's ability to call upon both angel and demon abilities, dramatically affecting the gameplay style.
Your days are numbered. The chilling reminder that the apocalypse is upon us comes from Atlus U.S.A., Inc. and the upcoming strategy role-playing game, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker. Exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS™ handheld system, Record Breaker offers nearly double the content of the originalDevil Survivor 2. The new Record Breaker content also includes fully voiced English story dialogue, giving new depth to the cast of Devil Survivor 2's original story. Record Breaker requires no knowledge of the story from the original Devil Survivor, so newcomers to the series won't lack any crucial plot information. The game will be available at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS for $49.99 in early 2015. Additional information can be found on the official website at www.atlus.com/devilsurvivor2rb
The world of Record Breaker is on the brink of non-existence. Just before the heralding of the apocalypse, when life was normal, some thrill-seekers were registering on a website that promised to deliver fake videos of their friends being killed. As people wondered what these videos could mean, an invasion began and humanity was forced to face a struggle to survive in an unprecedented catastrophe. For the main character and his friends, they stand up for humanity when the very same website uploads an application on their cell phones, summoning demons. From there, newly minted demon tamers begin the fight to survive and save the future of mankind, but the protagonist's decisions aren't without consequences. What he chooses may save the lives of his friends, or seal their fate.
For those who played the original Devil Survivor 2, the new plot expands the story by continuing the game from the ending of the original game. This continuation introduces a new character to the game, Miyako Hotsuin, but her origins are deeply shrouded in mystery. Record Breaker gives players the option of either skipping to the new content right away or playing through the original game first, suiting the needs for all experience levels.
Main features in Record Breaker include:
Tactical Combat with a Side of Demon Fusion -- The elements that make the Devil Survivor series great are back and better than ever with robust, turn-based strategic combat. Since the game is part of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, fusing demons together to form a stronger army is back as a core mechanic!
Choose Your Own Fate -- The line between life and death is razor-thin in Record Breaker. Actions have their consequences, and in the wake of the apocalypse, a wrong choice can result in the permanent death of a character. Multiple endings present the challenge of making all the right choices at the right time.
Extra Content ATLUS is Known For -- Record Breaker expands on the original Devil Survivor 2 by nearly doubling the amount of storyline for a total of more than 100 hours of strategic game play and consuming plot, with the additional mystery of Miyako Hotsuin to unravel.
New Personalities to Discover -- For the first time, Devil Survivor 2 is getting fully voiced English story dialogue. The voiced dialogue in both the new content and the original story gives added depth in bringing the game's characters to life from ominous beginning to dramatic end.
Enhanced game play -- Record Breaker gives player characters new abilities, and the world is chock full of more demons to fuse.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker will be available in the Americas in early 2015 for $49.99. Details on release date, and pre-order bonuses are still to come. The game received a rating of T for Teen from the ESRB. For more information, visit the official website www.atlus.com/devilsurvivor2rb
Recently, Dengeki PlayStation listed comments from over 100 developers that asked about the status of their games. The one that most stuck out was NIS own comment which didn't really seem optimistic at all. Here is what Shinkawa Sohei of Nippon Icchi had to say:
They need 150k to net a profit. However, it seems very unlikely with PS4 only having two games reaching that in Japan (Knack, which was bundled and MGS: Ground Zeroes), PS4 being somewhat of a flop in Japan, no Disgaea has ever reached 150k in sales, the fact that the game is exclusive to PS4, and also the fact that it releases the same day as Bloodborne which has a lot of hype behind it. I wish NIS the best of luck.
